@amato_0 got interrupted, but am restarting now. I’m looking forward to the promised battery savings.

@fvonb but good to know about Maya and modo.
@fvonb it’s not my working machine. I do run a few pro applications on there, but mostly for when I am away or to test stuff, like a new OS.
Installing Mavericks on my MBP. Anyone tested it with Maya 2013.5, Nuke 7.0 and modo701 yet? Or any other pro apps for that matter. #vfx
In anticipation of the upcoming Halloween, let me share this little nugget from my past with you. :) evrpx.co/NIWha4VJLlOKaa…
Morning fine folks.
@frankjonen but yes, the article you linked to expands on it in much more detail.
@frankjonen found it: cl.ly/2K3n171H0B3E about ¾ down the page.
@frankjonen great. looks like my blog is broken and I didn’t notice it. had the article on there as well and can’t find it on fxguide.
@frankjonen fxguide
@frankjonen did you read my report on hardware accelerated OpenSubDiv? That is something to look out for. :)
@frankjonen my point is, there is a valid case for normals, but it is not rendered 3D.
@frankjonen but there is need for it in realtime.
@frankjonen but the calculation of the new normals from a displaced (or bumped) surface is not complicated. there’s no need for it in 3D.
@frankjonen no displacement from your 4 shots.
@frankjonen thing is, normal maps are nothing else then bump maps with the new normals already calculated in.
@frankjonen You can just as well create a proper displacement map or stick to a bump. when doing the 4 shots thing.
@frankjonen I’d argue that you still don’t need a normal map in this case.
@frankjonen you mean for real world stuff that you want to bring into 3D?
@frankjonen faster rendertimes in theory, but in practice with today’s processors? I doubt it.
@RickyDoodles lol. busted. I’m moonlighting as burr grinder maker.
I’ll never understand the point of using a normal map instead of a bump outside a game context.
My pal Andy Coughlan is getting his film production-ready and has a survey that he would appreciate you to fill out: cl.ly/1u1t0i432z0r
@fvonb well, the 2007 model was just getting way too slow even with a RAM upgrade.
Good morning folks. Already hard at work waiting for a render sipping my coffee. #vfxishard
